Colorado Camping

Camping in Colorado is one of the most beautiful places to take a weekend trip . Whether your camping, staying at a cabin or just out for the day, Colorado is where it is at. If your looking at taking a trip to southern Colorado check out Vallecito Lake or Lemon Lake. Pagosa Springs is another beautiful place to camp. There is not a lake in Pagosa, but the scenery is awesome to be around. Two of the most beautiful places would be Silverton and Ouray. These two towns have a lot to offer along with the scenery. If traveling north one of the best places with outstanding views would be Vail. Up in Vale it is some the most beautiful scenery out there. The steep mountain drives are breathtaking, but may not be for the faint of heart. Southern Colorado is where I travel most, because it is closer to my home. Some resorts I have stayed at Vallecito Lake are Five Braches campground and RV park, Blue Spruce campground and Middle mountain campground. All of which are very nice. Five Branches is more populated than most campgrounds, but still has very nice spots for tent sites and cabins right on the Pine River. They also have showers with very well kept bathrooms, a conveinant store as well as a laundry room. It is an excellent spot to take the kids if your not really looking to rough it to much. Now if you are looking for a little bit more privacy Lemon Lake is where you want to be, but be prepared because there are no stores or any amenities around this area. The nearest store would be at Vallecito Lake which is about a half hour away. Lemon Lake does make for some excellent fishing, horseback riding and hiking in the beautiful mountains that are filled with pine and aspen trees.

Tent Camping

If your going to camp in a tent in Colorado be sure to be prepared with warm weather clothing and cold weather clothing as well. Bring extra blankets and sleeping bags because it always gets cold at night. Everything else you can pretty much deal with for the most part, but don't forget your tent which is the most important thing. If you do not have a tent try looking into buying a good quality one because you never know what the weather might look like. Coleman, Ozark Trail or Cabelas are some of the top brands out there that are available. If you do buy a new tent the best thing to do before you go camping is to set the tent up in the front yard all the way and then grab the hose and start spraying. Have one of the kids sit inside or check inside periodically for water puddles or dripping water . If your tent is leaking you would rather find out at home and not a 100 miles out in the bush. To fix the leak grab some super glue or some rubber cement and go over the seams where it has been stiched that is most likley where the leaks are coming from. Let dry for a while, then spray with hose again until no more leaks can be found. Also you want  to bring some tarps just in case it rains. I can not stress how important it is that water in the tent while your out in the middle of nowhere can ruin your whole trip. BE SURE that when you set your tent up at the campsite put a tarp underneath your tent to help from moisture, and be sure the tent is a little biger than the tarp, if not you have a funnel for rain right underneath your tent.

Camping supplies

If your heading out for the weekend and looking for some ideas on supplies that you might need to survive a trip, you should start by making a check list of all the neccesities you need like lanterns, food, clothes, tarps, coolers, cooking utinsles, drinks (water), sleeping bags, tent and a first aid kit just in case of an accident.  Also don't forget a lighter or matches to light a fire. One of the things you have to have to stay warm, cook food and keep big animals away (hopefully). Thats just the basic stuff to get you through so you can revise your own list with more stuff if needed. You should try not to make a huge list of all the stuff you think you might need but dont really have to have. It makes it a lot easier and less stressfull on everyone when there is less to deal with. The less stress you have the more time you get to spend enjoying it all. Try packing simple foods for breakfast like cereals and fruits. For lunch pack general items for sandwhiches and chips. For dinner I know everyone likes steak and shrimp with mash potatos and corn on the cob. I  also recommend  some beans (BUSHES GRILLEN BEANS) if possible already canned just open and put on fire. Bread and butter with the meal goes well also. Something to make it easier with cooking is to buy a big flat griddle to cook on it works wonders with the campfire also get some good coals going in the fire. Then you just have to put small pieces of wood in the fire to get some real heat going. Do not put a big log on the red hot coals you will have too much fire to deal with not to mention really hot as well. The food will always end up getting burnt or dropped. Using metal utensils to cook with goes a long way as well. They don't melt on you like plastic would, but for your eating utensils use plastic forks and knives with paper plates, it makes it a lot easier to cleanup. When your camping this way you can get on your way to fishing, hiking or whatever the day holds for you.

Activities

Wherever you go camping in Colorado there are a lot of activites to do. Look online at trail heads in Colorado to find some good trails to go hiking on. It will also tell you how long they are, how tough they are and the danger of the trail so check ahead before  going on to the first trail head you see.  Another thing you can try is fishing you just have to have patience and the right bait. Talk to your local guide to see what is good for fishing around there. Another exciting activity would be horse back riding. These rides take you on a tour of the mountains and give you an opportunity to see the beautiful countryside. Whatever it is that you do just be sure to be prepared and safe and have fun.

Hey jabyrd82 I'm a Farmington Native (well Aztec really). I have lived in Ridgway, CO for the last four years and couldn't agree with you more bro. The San Juan Mountains are some of the most beautiful in all of Colorado. I'll shoot you some pics, or do a hub with them. I sell real estate here and absolutely love it! We are actually headed to Farmington this weekend for a wedding.

Great hub, jabyrd82! I love camping as well. You gave some really helpful tips, especially about double-checking to see if your tent has any leaks. You really stressed it well enough for anybody that is reading this to not make such an avoidable mistake. Should you get a chance, please check this hub:

Colorado's landlocked status is forgivable because of two factors: the climate and the outdoor sports!

I love living in this state and exploring everything it has to offer year-round. Great tribute and gorgeous images!
